Resurfacing Procedures

We first start sanding a bowling lane by using the Gallicchio Longitudinal "Maxi" Sander. This sander removes all of the old finish from the bowling lane and at the same time it levels the entire lane. This sander has a level built on it that allows the person riding, to see the level of every inch of the lane. This sander also removes any high and low areas, making the entire bowling lane, from the foul line through the back of the pin deck, flat. When a bowling lane is flat longitudinally, lane conditioner can be applied more uniformally and a bowling ball will remain in contact with the lane surface the entire length of the lane, thus creating a more consistent and higher scoring condition.

Next we remove the finish from the first few feet on the lane side of the foul line with a 12" drum sander. The Gallicchio Maxi Sander reads this as a low area, due to the approach being thicker then the lane, thus it will not sand this area. We first sand this area at a 45 degree angle to make this area flat and then we sand with the grain to remove any 45 degree marks.

At the same time we are sanding the lanes, we are also removing all of the old finish from the approaches. This is also done with a 12" drum sander.

Once all of the finish has been removed and the lane is level, the bowling lane is ready to be fine sanded. We start using the Gallicchio Longitudinal Belt Sander. This usually requires a couple of passes, using two different grits of sanding belts. This sander will remove the sanding marks from the coarser paper used by the first sander. Very little wood is remove with this sander.

The final sanding to the lanes is done with a Progress Oscilator, using a fine grit of sand paper, followed by two screenings to close the pores of the wood. This first screening is done with a rotary and the second is done with an oscilator. The oscilatior will remove any swirl marks that a rotary might leave.

The approaches (not pictured) are also fine sanded with two different grits of sand paper, followed by a screening, using a rotary.

Finally it is time to clean the lanes in preparation of applying the lane and approach finish. We start by cleaning everything with a dust mop, then we dry towel everything, and finally we use a tac cloth on the lanes and approaches. We then tape white wax paper at the foul line and apply the base coat. Once the base coat is applied, we then coat the approaches. While the base coat is drying, we load up our equipment and then start cleaning the bowlers area and concourse. We even bring our own vacuum to clean your carpet.

Once the base coat has dried, we then black pad each lane, again using the Oscilators, followed by a couple of more cleanings of your lanes using a damp towel. We then tape the white paper at the foul line and apply the final coat of finish.
